Our Guyanese cooking class: the details
After the resounding success of our first class we can’t wait to host the next one. Luckily we don’t have to wait long since we’re officially scheduled for Friday, Nov. 30th! We are especially excited because our next class features Guyanese cuisine, taught by our amazing chef instructor, Veda Sukhu. Because of its unique history and location, Guyanese cuisine combines the best of East Indian, African, Portuguese, Chinese, Amerindian, and British flavors and spices. Never had Guyanese cuisine? Never even heard of Guyana? Welcome to the club. This class embodies why we started Global Kitchen, to expose our participants to cultures and cuisines they wouldn’t normally get to experience.
We were lucky enough to get connected with Veda back in April through our friends at Hot Bread Kitchen, where she is a member of their incubator program. After our initial meeting with Veda it was clear that she would make an ideal chef instructor: passionate about food and culture, determined to preserve and teach authentic recipes, and all-around great person and storyteller. We were lucky enough to have Veda teach our pilot class back in May and she won everyone over the same way she had with us. Since then she’s been selling her cakes and savory curry dishes around the city, mostly through the Queens County Market, and gaining attention from the press for her delicious Guyanese dishes. We are incredibly excited to be able to bring her back to teach another class and hope that you can join us!
